Light of Arunachala

A pilgrimage to the sacred fire mountain, the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, and the spirit of seva

Tiruvannamalai Pilgrimage

The Sacred Fire Mountain

Tiruvannamalai is one of India's most powerful spiritual centers, home to the sacred Arunachala mountain—considered by devotees to be Lord Shiva himself in the form of fire (Agni lingam). This intimate 11-day journey (12 people maximum) immerses you in the profound teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, the ancient traditions of Annamalayar Temple, and meaningful seva with the vibrant local community.

A Journey of Self-Inquiry, Devotion & Service

This pilgrimage centers on three pillars: Self-inquiry through the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi at Ramanasramam, Devotion through temple worship and girivalam (circumambulation of Arunachala), and Seva through meaningful volunteer work with local organizations serving the community.

Our commitment: Every journey supports local education initiatives, community kitchens, and environmental projects—while deepening your understanding of Advaita Vedanta through direct practice and guidance.

The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi

Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950) is one of the most revered spiritual masters of the 20th century. At age 16, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening and was drawn to Arunachala, where he spent the rest of his life. His teaching of Self-inquiry ("Who am I?") points directly to the nature of consciousness and the realization of the Self.

Core Teaching: Self-Inquiry (Atma Vichara)

"The question 'Who am I?' is not really meant to get an answer. The question 'Who am I?' is meant to dissolve the questioner."

Rather than accumulating spiritual knowledge, Ramana taught that liberation comes through turning attention inward to discover the source of the "I" thought—revealing that what we truly are is pure, unchanging awareness.

The Power of Arunachala

Ramana often spoke of Arunachala as the spiritual heart of the world. He said that simply thinking of Arunachala, or being in its presence, has the power to still the mind and reveal the Self. The mountain is considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva as the column of fire (Jyotirlinga), representing the light of pure consciousness.

Guide Suresh, temple priest at Annamalayar Temple

Meet Your Guide: Suresh

Suresh is not only our local guide in Tiruvannamalai but also serves as a priest at the sacred Annamalayar Temple. Born and raised in the shadow of Arunachala, he carries deep knowledge of the temple's ancient traditions, rituals, and the esoteric significance of its sacred spaces.

As a temple priest, Suresh has access to inner sanctums and can explain the profound symbolism behind each puja and offering. His family has served at the temple for generations, and he shares stories passed down through centuries of devotion.

Beyond the temple, Suresh is deeply connected to the local community and the various seva organizations in Tiruvannamalai. He will introduce you to families, artisans, and volunteers working to uplift the community—offering genuine connections that go far beyond typical tourism.

Seva: The Path of Service

In Tiruvannamalai, seva (selfless service) is not separate from spiritual practice—it is spiritual practice. The town is home to numerous ashrams and organizations dedicated to serving the local community, and we integrate meaningful volunteer opportunities throughout the journey.

Community Kitchen (Annadanam)

Participate in preparing and serving free meals to pilgrims and local families at ashram kitchens. This ancient tradition of feeding all who come, regardless of caste or creed, embodies the spirit of unconditional giving.

Educational Support

Visit local schools and educational projects that provide free education to children from underserved communities. Opportunities to teach English, share skills, or simply spend time with the children.

Environmental Initiatives

Join clean-up efforts along the girivalam path, tree planting projects on the slopes of Arunachala, or support sustainable agriculture initiatives in surrounding villages.

Elder Care

Spend time with elderly devotees at ashram care facilities, offering companionship, assistance, or simply a listening ear. Many have profound spiritual wisdom to share.

"When you serve others without expectation, you are not the doer—you become an instrument through which grace flows."
